Communities of Practice: An approach used to upskill SEND teachers and support staff in ensuring maths and English is 'Everyone's Business' (Code: C1013)

Responding to suggestions from CfE in SEND members to offer a three-part focus group in sharing effective practice in developing maths and English skills of learners with SEND and upskilling staff.

This focus group aims to share the challenges and successes and how a new approach has been implemented over a two year period that has given all SEND teachers and support staff the confidence to develop the leaners skills across the curriculum as well as increasing success. This has ensured the development of maths and English is 'Everyone's Business'.

Who is this for?

SEND/learning support/curriculum managers, teachers, lead practitioners, practitioners.

Training aim

To provide an opportunity for professionals to join as one community of practice, the focus group will enable (but not limited to):

  • Recognising and identifying the opportunity to upskill and develop staff to embrace a SEND maths and English approach of 'Everyone's business'.
  • Sharing of individual challenges, particularly within the current landscape.
  • Sharing and reviewing current practices.
  • Request further support in operational knowledge, upskilling and/or topical themes.
  • To listen, learn and share good practice.
  • A relaxed session providing an environment to feel supported and to support others and to build a network of professionals specialising in SEND maths and English.

Outcomes

By participating in the focus group you will:

  • recognise and identify the opportunity to upskill and develop staff to embrace a SEND maths and English approach of 'Everyone's business'
  • have the opportunity to share individual challenges, particularly within the current landscape
  • have an opportunity to share and review current practices
  • have an opportunity to request further support in operational knowledge, upskilling and/or topical themes
  • have the opportunity to listen to, learn from and share effective practice
  • have the opportunity to share ideas, to feel supported and to support others and build a network of professionals specialising in SEND maths and English.
