Presenting statistical data using graphs and charts (Code: C1238)
Quantitative data is pervasive in society. Technology allows representations of data to be easily produced in various forms without considering the most appropriate representation. Guidance on the advantages and disadvantages of different representations is often superficial.
This interactive course will present different ways to represent data and how interpreting graphs has an important role to play. All the graphical displays in the GCSE specification will be covered, and participants will have a chance to discuss the merits of alternative representations in a variety of contexts
Who is this for?
This course is for teachers and other practitioners delivering GCSE maths in the Further Education and Training sector. Teachers of Functional Skills maths, vocational courses and T levels should also find much of this course useful.
To provide you with an understanding of the nature of different graphical representations, and how to compare competing possible representations. You will explore several data sets and see how different formats might be chosen depending on what question is to be illuminated by the graph, including considering how autoscaling on the y-axis distorts the story being told by the data.
On this course, you will:
- identify what the graphs included in the GCSE specification allow you to represent data well
- critically compare alternative representations to choose which would be the best way to represent the data to answer a specific question
- critically comment on where a representation distorts what the data actually says.
