Maths is beautiful (Code: C1249)

Making maths a positive experience for learners resitting GCSE or studying towards Functional Skills maths can be a challenge. This course will counter the ideas that maths is not relevant or is not connected to art, music, patterns or creativity. It will provide practical ideas and resources for energising maths learning.

Participants will be given the opportunity to share their ideas about beauty in mathematics and will be encouraged to apply these in their teaching so that they can motivate their learners in surprising and interesting ways.

Who is this for?

This course is for GCSE and Functional Skills maths practitioners and non-maths specialists who wish to re-energise their thinking about maths. Non-maths practitioners may also find this session useful, such as in the areas of geography, design and technology, art, music, technical drawing, carpentry or other vocational contexts.

Training aim

To inspire you to investigate the beauty of maths and through this develop your own mathematical interest and understanding. You will be able to motivate and inspire your learners by encouraging them to see maths as creative and applicable to their lives and learning.

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • consider examples of the beauty in maths (visual, musical, algebraic)
  • investigate how maths and patterns are interwoven and how maths has influenced art and design
  • map ideas to maths learning
  • discuss how you might revisit your teaching plans to incorporate some of the ideas presented.
