Maths puzzles (Code: C1250)

Maths games and puzzles can develop fluency in mathematical skills, engage learners and help to develop deeper thinking. Geometric and algebraic puzzles can encourage learners to use reasoning skills as well as problem-solving, which link to all three GCSE Assessment Objectives as well as real-life and work-based maths situations.

This course will introduce a range of geometry and algebra games and puzzles to engage maths learners to help develop mathematical fluency, encourage deep thinking and support problem solving development.

Who is this for?

This course is for practitioners delivering GCSE maths as it focuses upon fluency in number and challenge within algebra and geometry through a range of puzzles and games. Aspects of it will be useful for those delivering Functional Skills maths,

Training aim

To enable you to better support your learners through games and puzzles that link to of the GCSE Assessment Objectives and Functional Skill Standards. You will be able to encourage learners to use games and puzzles outside of the classroom for fluency and challenge. 

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • consider how games and puzzles develop reasoning and problem solving skills and encourage collaborative learning
  • discuss tasks, misconceptions, challenges and assessment
  • reflect upon how to use these activities and approaches in your own teaching.
