The programme comprises an intensive 2-day residential, an interim work based project plus day 3.

Unsubsidised fee: £450 (not employed by a SFA-funded organisation)

Free Places

A limited number of free places are offered on this course. Please see the 'Upcoming' section above for current availability. Free places are offered to ensure greater diversity on our courses, so to qualify you must either:

  • Work in an organisation in one of the 12 opportunity areas (Blackpool, Bradford, Derby, Doncaster, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire, Hastings, Ipswich, Norwich, Oldham, Scarborough, Stoke, West Somerset)
  • Work in an organisation with an annual turnover of less than £500,000
  • Consider yourself to have a disability
  • Come from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) background

Training aim

To prepare you to be better equipped and more confident to lead maths and/or English provision in your organisations.


Day 1 (residential)

(Re) Imagining yourself as a Leade

  • Identify & share strategies for effective practice in managing maths/English
  • Explore the ecologies of practice in supporting changes in maths/English
  • Use 'The Thinking Environment' framework (Kline, 1984) - a simple, powerful and rigorous framework for transforming leadership & organisational culture
  • Reflect on Thinking Environment processes in leadership
  • Make connections between personal aspirations & styles of leadership
  • Develop a re imagining of yourself as a leader
  • Considered 'wicked'problems

Day 2

Identifying your issue and a plan to address it

  • Outline key changes you can make to maths/English provision, building on what you have already achieved
  • Clarify your vision
  • Identify the key influencers and their role in your vision
  • Explain how practices can be transformed as a result of research
  • Identify and sharpen your wicked problem into a small achievable goal defined as a PICO question


'This programme consists of a two-day residential, an interim work-based project and a third day to follow at a later date.

A work based project will be undertaken between the residential and day 3 with support of a project mentor.

Day 3: Implementing changes to maths and English provision
  • Outline key changes that you can and have made to maths and English provision, drawing on the work of leading researchers and your peers.

Entry Requirements

You should typically be new to managing or coordinating maths and English provision within their organisation.  

There will be some pre-course activity to undertake and project based work between the residential and day 3.
