WLN Women and Wellbeing Action Learning Set (ALS) (Code: C1347)
This action learning set (ALS) is organisational development learning about real problems in real life with real people. It will bring you together with other women leaders and managers to work intensively on four occasions in a small group on the things that challenge you as a leader about maintaining your own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others in the workplace, your career, working relationships, and life. Working alongside each other, you will find solutions and develop skills beyond the pandemic - skills for future leadership and management thinking, vision and practice.

Who is this for?
WLN is all about achieving intersectional gender equality: increasing the diversity of leaders and leadership in FE, redefining leadership, changing our workplaces and amplifying diverse women's voices. We actively dismantle barriers.
This course is for women who lead in all kinds of FE, skills, and lifelong learning, in all sorts of roles, including (A-Z order):
- advanced practitioners
- managers - junior, middle, and senior
- project and programme leads
- subject specialists
- team leaders,
- trade union officers
As part of our commitment to race equality in leadership in all kinds of further education, in addition to the ETF subsidised cost WLN also offers some full-cost bursaries to women of Black and minoritised heritage and other women experiencing barriers to their leadership development.

Using an intersectional gender equality lens and the evidence on what works for wellbeing, WLN aims to:
- Recognise and overcome systemic and internalised intersectional gender barriers.
- Provide time and space for thinking.
- Create the conditions to learn, work and thrive in an ever-changing environment.
- Increase interaction, deep conversations, critical thinking and focussed learning activities.
- Encourage learning beyond the individual and their organisation.
- Counter the traditional heroic and damaging culture in FE that can leave senior leaders on a 'tightrope of distress' (Stuart Rimmer, 2021).
- Strengthen future women leaders' potential.

We take our responsibility seriously to deliver high-quality training and effective outcomes for women in FE.
We've chosen the facilitators and designed this ALS to support you to:
- Reflect and learn lessons from each other's experiences of leading, managing and living during times of crisis like the coronavirus pandemic.
- Explore the wellbeing evidence base (https://whatworkswellbeing.org).
- Recognise the unequal intersectional impacts coronavirus has had on women's lives and wellbeing.
- Develop your practice of self-care.
- Share positive strategies and identify organisational changes to embed and sustain staff and students' mental health and wellbeing.
- Acknowledge the importance of your mental health and wellbeing and how to protect it.
- Understand how to support others' wellbeing effectively, particularly people whose wellbeing is at most risk.
- Turn challenges into opportunities to promote wellbeing, change practice and support others.
Each ALS has 10 - 12 places available and involves four mandatory 2-hour sessions at approximately weekly intervals.
Where possible, we've scheduled session dates to avoid holidays and times to accommodate women with caring responsibilities, for example, dropping off and picking up children from school.
We ask you to, please:
- ensure you prioritise and protect the time in your diary
- attend all 4 sessions
- commit and contribute fully to your peers in the group and the action learning process
WLN actively dismantles barriers to entry and welcomes women in all their diversities, in all kinds of FE, skills and lifelong learning who are ready to:
- Learn collaboratively
- Act as agents for intersectional gender equality change
- Show solidarity
