Aspiring to Senior Leadership (Code: C1436)

This short, focused programme has been developed by sector experts as an enabling programme to support the career development of established middle leaders who are keen to progress to their first senior leadership role in further education colleges, independent training providers, sixth form colleges, local authority providers or other ESFA funded organisations.

The programme forms a vital part of the Education and Training Foundation's suite of national leadership programmes and is aimed at building the talent pipeline for the further education and training sector.

Free Places

A limited number of free places are offered on this course. Please see the 'Upcoming' section above for current availability. The free places are fully funded by the DfE and are offered to ensure greater diversity on high quality CPD, so to qualify you must either:

  • Work in an organisation in one of the 24 priority areas (Blackpool, Bradford, Derby, Doncaster, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire, Halton, Hartlepool, Hastings, Ipswich, Knowsley, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Nottingham, Oldham, Portsmouth, Rochdale, Salford, Sandwell, Scarborough, Stoke-on-Trent, Tameside, Walsall, West Somerset).
  • Work in an organisation with an annual turnover of less than £500,000.
  • Consider yourself to have a disability.
  • Come from black or minority ethnic community.

You must also agree to be contacted by our evaluation team.

To book a free place find a course that has free places remaining and book a single place. At the payments stage of the booking you will be asked to tell us which of the four criteria you meet. Once selected, click on the 'recalculate' button to reduce the cost of the booking to zero and complete the booking.

If, for whatever reason, you are unable to attend, please advise us at least two weeks before the course takes place. This will allow us to offer the free place to someone else who works in the FE sector, so they can take advantage of this offer.

Who is this for?

Participants will have completed a middle leadership programme such as the Education and Training Foundation's Leading From The Middle and will be established in a middle leadership role.

Colleagues may be in the position of Head of Department, Deputy Director or Assistant Principal and will be aiming to progress to a function which provides them with a place on a senior leadership team. We would expect participants to have undertaken their current roles for a good period of time and to have developed the skills and capabilities that will provide them with an excellent grounding to move into their first senior leadership role.

Training aim

To prepare participants appropriately for assuming a role in senior leadership in the Further Education and training sector.

Outcomes

1. To build the strategic abilities of the individual by considering the key developments, opportunities and challenges facing the further education and training sector.

2. To build strategic financial awareness of participants.

3. To explore contemporary thinking about the most effective ways of managing change in organisations.

4. To explore a range of senior leadership opportunities in the further education and training sector and to build an understanding of the skills and capabilities required to lead at senior level.

5. To undertake a practice assessment, selection and interview activities all focused on building awareness, techniques and confidence to succeed in a senior recruitment process.

Length

The programme will incorporate two seminars (2 hours each) and two full-day workshops and will extend over 4-5 months.

Participants will have completed a middle leadership programme such as the Education and Training Foundation's Leading From The Middle and will be established in a middle leadership role.

Must be from a publicly funded FE provider in England.
