Who is this for?
This course is for teachers and other practitioners delivering GCSE maths and Functional Skills maths in the Further Education and Training sector.
This course is particularly suitable for:
- Those new to teaching maths
- New teachers of Functional Skills maths
- Experienced teachers and trainers who have recently transferred from other areas to teach maths, including vocational teachers and assessors
- Those who do not currently teach maths, but are considering teaching maths in the future
This course is designed to meet the needs of all parts of the Further Education sector, including independent training providers, offender learning and adult and community education.
Training aim
This course aims to develop the practice of new, existing, and aspiring teachers of Functional Skills Maths in the Further Education and Skills sector. The course explores key pedagogical concepts which underpin best practice in Functional Skills Maths as well as practical evidence-based teaching strategies to support learners to make progress in Functional Skills Maths.
Outcomes
By the end of the sessions, you will have the knowledge and confidence to:
- Motivate and engage reluctant learners and address barriers to maths learning
- Plan teaching and learning in accordance with up-to-date subject content for Functional Skills Maths
- Use inclusive and active approaches to develop learners' skills
- Contextualise and apply maths to vocational learning and everyday situations
- Support learners to use post-16-informed Mastery approaches to learning Functional Skills Maths
- Develop learners' problem solving and decision-making skills
- Use assessment for learning approaches to support Functional Maths learners prepare for the requirements of summative assessment.
Length
A total of 20 hours plus independent reading and reflection in between facilitated sessions.
- In-house delivery: 10 x 2 hour online sessions or 1 day face-to-face training follwed by 8 x 2 hour online sessions.
- Open delivery: 10 x 2 hour online sessions.
Entry Requirements
- Employment in a teaching/training/assessing role in the Further education and Skills sector
- Currently delivering Functional Skills maths, or expecting to deliver soon.
- A maths qualification at level 2 or above (beneficial)
- Any teaching-related qualification (beneficial)
