This course is for teachers and other practitioners delivering GCSE maths in the Further Education and Training sector. It may also be useful for Vocational staff providing T levels with substantial mathematical content and for those transitioning from functional maths delivery to GCSE maths.

Who is this for?

  • Existing teachers who currently teach GCSE maths and would benefit from training and development.
  • New GCSE teachers such as Functional Skills teachers or vocational teachers who are teaching or have taught maths at level 2 and meet the entry requirements.

Training aim

This course will provide participants with an understanding of the challenges posed in teaching a group with very diverse educational and life experiences. It will support developing a range of strategies, approaches and activities related to engagement and effective practice in teaching GCSE maths within the the further education and training sector.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • motivate and inspire reluctant learners
  • use assessment approaches to support GCSE maths learning
  • plan teaching and learning to meet GCSE maths curriculum requirements and the diverse needs of learners
  • use active learning strategies and connected, challenging teaching methods to make GCSE maths teaching more effective
  • develop an in-depth understanding of maths at GCSE and beyond
  • use or undertake research to develop and improve own practice in GCSE maths teaching.

Length

10 online sessions, two hours each, once a week for 10 weeks.

You will also be expected to engage in independent study in between facilitated sessions.

Entry Requirements

  • A maths qualification at level 3 or above , or able to demonstrate level 3 process skills and personal skills
  • A teaching qualification e.g. DTLLS, Cert Ed, PGCE etc
