Who is this for?

This course is for teachers and other practitioners delivering GCSE maths, Functional skills maths and any unregulated maths courses to ESOL learners in post-16 provision, including Further Education and Training sector. It may also be of interest to staff who are teaching T levels with a substantial mathematical component .  

This course is particularly suitable for:

Training aim

  • To consider how learner profiles can inform planning and delivering maths lessons for ESOL learners
  • To identify potential barriers and opportunities for ESOL learners in maths learning
  • To develop strategies to support ESOL learners with acquision of key vocabulary and mathematical concepts.
  • To identify strategies to support ESOL students with initial, diagnostic, formative and summative assessments.

Outcomes

By the end of this course , you will have the knowledge and confidence to:  

  • consider learner profiles and learners’ language needs for planning and delivering maths lessons for ESOL learners  
  • consider strategies to support ESOL learners with mathematical language and context  
  • develop strategies to support ESOL learners with initial , diagnostic, formative and summative assessments  
  • Plan and develop maths curriculum that meets the needs of diverse ESOL learners  

Length

In-house delivery: 2 x 2.5 hours face-to-face or online sessions.

Open delivery: 2 x 2 hour online sessions. 

Entry Requirements

  • A maths specific teaching qualification   
  • Employment in a teaching/training role in the post-16 education and training sector  
  • Currently delivering Functional Skills or GCSE maths or expecting to soon.
