Developing T Level English

This is one-day, face to face session is the third step in a four-part programme supporting the development of embedded English in T Level programmes. The session builds on an introductory module which explores effective practice in embedding and an e-learning module 'Supporting vocational English skills'. The session is designed to help you to explore the requirements for embedding English in T Levels and plan practical approaches to support learners' English development.

Who is this for?

The course is designed to appeal to T Level educators; this includes curriculum planners, course leaders, lecturers, trainers, assessors and support staff. There is no need for you to hold a specific English qualification or have extensive experience in this area. However, to get the most out of the session we would advise you to have completed the online module, 'Developing embedded English skills for T Levels ' and the one day introductory session, 'Introduction to embedding maths, English and digital skills in T Levels', beforehand.

Training aim

This course will help teachers plan T Level courses equipping learners to undertake technical, workplace practices including the English that they are formed of. The course will model a range of effective activities designed to support learners' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You will be encouraged to plan and design learning resources suitable for your technical area and devise assessment activities which develop these four skills. You will be asked to explore a variety of AfL (Assessment for Learning) strategies including the marking and feedback on written work and consider how learning strategies might be adapted to be made more inclusive. You will be asked to reflect upon your own development needs and those of your team and to use professional standards as benchmarks in an action plan. After a period of implementation and reflection, you will be invited to join an interactive webinar to share what they have learnt.


By the end of the session, you will have the knowledge and confidence to:

  • identify the embedded English in your T Level route and your role in supporting learners to develop this
  • plan teaching, learning and assessment activities that support T Level learners' development of:
    • listening
    • speaking
    • reading
    • writing
  • carry out assessment for learning of embedded English, including marking/ feeding back on learners' written work
  • identify your own/team development needs around embedded English in T Levels
  • locate and signpost colleagues to sources of support for teachers' English personal & pedagogy development.
