Training aim

The focus of the action research projects has already been agreed by Centre Leads at CfEM Leadership CPD (May 2019).

This programme will support all those participating to confidently undertake the practitioner-led action research, whether it be 'classroom focussed' or outside of the 'classroom' during 2019-2010.

Projects will focus on:

  • An adapted mastery approach to mathematics, suitable for the post-16 sector.
  • Approaches to contextualisation which relate maths to real-world situations.
  • Motivating and engaging learners.
  • The use of data and technology within mathematics education in the sector.

Outcomes

You will have the knowledge and confidence to:

  • produce a plan for your action research focused on your research question
  • inform your action research through effective critical reading focused on your topic
  • work collaboratively with your action research team across your Centre and partners
  • identify the data you will be collecting to investigate your topic
  • devise data collection methods
  • engage learners and peers in effecting improvements
  • manage ethical issues
  • work collaboratively to plan manageable changes to your practice
  • identify opportunities to network, collaborate and share best practice and learning arising from participation in your action research project
  • developing and delivering effective curriculum and teaching resources.

Length

  • Three days (two-day residential plus day 3 in the Summer term of 2020).

You will be expected to plan and carry out a collaborative Centre-focussed action research project between the residential and Day 3.

The collaborative Centre-focussed action research project will enable you to:

  • apply learning, research and ideas from the residential into practice
  • problem solve by 'testing' ideas in real time and collecting information and data to make judgements
  • understand & deliver teaching approaches associated with the four CfEM themes.

You will also receive four CfEM handbooks on the topics of:

  • An adapted mastery approach to mathematics, suitable for the post-16 sector.
  • Approaches to contextualisation which relate maths to real-world situations.
  • Motivating and engaging learners.
  • The use of data and technology within mathematics education in the sector.
