This one day course explores the use of phonics in developing reading and spelling skills across the Entry Levels but with a particular focus on supporting learners at Entry 3. It combines some of the core subject knowledge about phonics covered in the Emergent Readers and Writers course with the key teaching strategies featured in the Developing Readers and Writers module.

Who is this for?

Functional Skills English teachers and learning support assistants on Entry Level programmes. It is useful if participants have attended the following webinar: Using phonics-based teaching at Entry Level - an introductory webinar or an awareness raising workshop about phonics-based teaching. However this is not essential as a quick review of the content of those sessions is included at the start of the course.

Training aim

The course explores the principles and practices that underpin the new Post 16 Phonics Toolkit. You will first discuss the benefits and challenges of using phonics-based teaching and then explore the key concepts, terminology, skills progression and teaching approaches presented in the Toolkit. The day will include examples of how the development of phonic skills can be integrated into Functional English lessons for 1:1 and group sessions across the levels but with a particular focus on support strategies relevant to teachers working with learners at Entry 3.

Outcomes

By the end of the session, you will have the knowledge and confidence to:

  • explain the place of phonics in developing early reading and spelling skills
  • compare the benefits and challenges of using phonics-based teaching with post 16 learners
  • use a simplified progression of phonic skills when planning a Functional English programme
  • integrate some phonic-based teaching strategies into your teaching • access further support from the Post 16 Phonics Toolkit.
