English: improving reading (Code: C0745)
This course will draw on best practice approaches to engage learners in reading for work, study and pleasure, in order that they can improve their confidence to respond to texts in class and during assessments. The course will consider reading at word, sentence and text levels and will include 'whole text' approaches that can be used with learners to develop a range of reading skills.
Who is this for?
This course is for tutors who teach GCSE, Functional Skills English or other tutors who need to develop learners' reading abilities
This course aims to help teachers work with learners to improve their reading abilities. It will review approaches trialled by post-16 teachers that help develop a reading culture in classrooms/ training settings and across institutions. Learners will see how reading widely can improve their knowledge of the world and help them to become more confident writers.
By the end of the session you will have:
- an understanding of how to activate schematic knowledge to engage in and support reading
- awareness of a range of strategies help learners become active readers, able to identify audience, purpose and sequences of ideas
- confidence to help learners be aware of how writers use grammar and other sentence-level techniques to engage and communicate
- strategies to support learners to be aware of vocabulary and how writers use this to communicate effectively.
This is a blended learning course, which consists of two 90-minute live sessions and self-led learning between them. The live sessions are one week apart, giving you a week to complete the mid-course tasks.
