Who is this for?

This course is primarily aimed at subject specialist teachers of Functional Skills Maths but it may also be of interest to other practitioners working in the Further Education and Training sector who will be supporting the development of learners' Functional Skills, such as learning support assistants and some industrial and vocational practitioners.

We recommend that industrial and vocational teachers, trainers and assessors to first take part in the Developing maths in vocational/ technical contexts, for guidance on supporting learners to develop their maths abilities in industrial and vocational contexts.

Training aim

The aim of the one-day course is to introduce a variety of materials and activities. The course will help you to understand how you can adapt and use the activities to develop learners' Functional Skills Maths abilities and understanding.

Outcomes

You will have the knowledge and confidence to:

  • identify how and why context matters when developing learners' Functional Skills maths
  • plan differentiated, inclusive Functional Skills maths sessions, which build on learners' lives and maths/ numeracy practices
  • design Functional Skills maths sessions that meet Effective Practice Guidelines for assessment and tracking
  • support learners to achieve Functional Skills maths outcomes.

Length

This is a blended learning course, which consists of two 90-minute live sessions and self-led learning between them. The live sessions are one week apart, giving you a week to complete the mid-course tasks.
