Training aim

Drawing on lessons learnt from lockdown and research, the course aims to investigate some of the 'basic' skills which are vital to a learner's maths understanding in the limited time we have with them. The two sessions discuss a range of practical approaches to teaching which tutors can add to their practice. Practitioners will be encouraged to share their approaches when supporting learners who have misconceptions and gaps in their understanding.

By the end of the session you will have considered:

  • How you can support learners who have not previously thrived in maths
  • What you might add to your practice to improve your learners' experience of maths, including consideration of:
    • approaches to support skill development
    • maths mistakes and misconceptions
    • how you can support learners to develop their confidence and move on.

This is a blended learning course, which consists of two 2-hour live sessions and self-led learning between them. The live sessions will be held at least one week apart, giving you a week to complete the mid-course tasks.
