Drawing on lessons learnt from lockdown, this course aims to support teachers of GCSE and Functional Skills English who have ESOL learners in their groups and need to ensure their approaches are inclusive and prepare all learners, including ESOL, to make progress.

Free Places

  • Work in an organisation in one of the 12 opportunity areas (Blackpool, Bradford, Derby, Doncaster, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire, Hastings, Ipswich, Norwich, Oldham, Scarborough, Stoke, West Somerset)
  • Work in an organisation with an annual turnover of less than £500,000

Who is this for?

Teachers, learning support assistants and curriculum managers of GCSE English, Functional Skills English and family literacy.

Training aim

Drawing on lessons learnt from lockdown, this course aims to help Functional Skills and GCSE tutors identify the challenges that some ESOL learners face in English classes and then explore how a range of different approaches /adaptations to existing techniques might be used to support their improvement in all four skills ( Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening).

Outcomes

By the end of the course you will have:

  • identified which aspects of GCSE and Functional Skills English learners find most challenging  
  • identified some of the barriers that make these areas more difficult for ESOL learners  
  • explored different methods and resources to help learners access Functional Skills and GCSE reading and writing tasks
  • explored the use of some practical tips to help ESOL learners get the most from their English classes  
  • identified some useful e-learning tools and websites supporting ESOL learners. 

Length

This is a blended learning course, which consists of two 2-hour live sessions and self-led learning between them. The live sessions will be held at least one week apart, giving you a week to complete the mid-course tasks.
