Supporting Functional Skills learners (Maths) (Code: C0884)
This course will introduce you to a variety of contextual materials and activities that may be used to develop learners' Functional Skills maths abilities. You will be supported to identify how and why context matters and enable you to plan and design differentiated, inclusive Functional Skills maths sessions. Consideration will be taken of the EPGs for assessment and tracking and how to support learners to tackle assessment questions in order to achieve Functional Skills maths outcomes.

Who is this for?
This course is primarily aimed at subject specialist teachers of Functional Maths, both those new, and those with experience of planning and delivery. It may also be of interest to other practitioners working in the further education and skills sector who will be supporting the development of learners' Functional Skills, such as learning support assistants and some industrial and vocational practitioners.
We recommend that industrial and vocational teachers, trainers and assessors to first take part in the Developing maths in vocational/ technical contexts, for guidance on supporting learners to develop their maths abilities and confidence.
Drawing on lessons learnt from lockdown the aim of the 'one-day course' is to introduce a variety of materials and activities. The sessions drill into the FS maths subject content to highlight the required underpinning knowledge. The course will help you to understand how you can adapt and use the activities and assessment questions in order to develop learners' Functional Maths abilities and understanding.
You will have the knowledge and confidence to:
- identify how and why context matters when developing learners' Functional maths
- plan differentiated, inclusive Functional maths sessions, which build on learners' lives and maths/ numeracy practices
- support your learners to tackle assessment questions
- consider the Effective Practice Guidelines for assessment and tracking in order to develop your practice
- support learners to achieve Functional maths outcomes.
This is a blended learning course, which consists of two 2-hour live sessions and self-led learning between them. The live sessions will be held at least one week apart, giving you a week to complete the mid-course tasks.
