Visualising maths

Visualisation is accepted as an important aspect of mathematical reasoning. Edens and Potter state, "[Visualisations] assist students in learning to 'unpack' the structure of a problem" (2008). Visualisation refers to mental imagery people use make sense of problems. This includes using pictures, diagrams and charts that can help organise thoughts.

This interactive course will explore different ways visualisation-focused activities can support learners understanding and encourage deeper thinking in maths, including algebraic expressions, circle geometry, areas, and problem-solving.

Manipulating and using numbers

There is evidence from Chief Examiner reports that identifies manipulating and using numbers as likely to present the difficulty for a learner trying to achieve a Grade 4 and beyond on the Foundation Tier.

This course explores a range of methods and modelling that support skills development and deep learning of fractions, decimals, percentages, negative numbers, indices, and standard form. It introduces a range of rich collaborative tasks, tackles misconceptions and uses technology effectively.

Diversity in Leadership

The aim of this programme is to challenge bias, remove obstacles to achieving leadership roles and provide coaching to motivate and build confidence in aspiring leaders across the sector. The programme includes organisational culture change workshops and coaching for 30 diverse aspiring leaders and Governors, in particular those from a BAME background and those with protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. New for 2021/22 is a diversity masterclass series of three modules covering topics to address and reverse structural discrimination and to promote diversity and inclusion.
