BackThis course looks at the Functional Skills English content for Speaking, Listening and Communicating to help you understand language requirements at different levels of the exam and why it needs to be taught separately. It will explore examples of practical activities for supporting learners with opportunities to share ideas. It will include not only what to say in different circumstances but how to say it, how to listen in ways that communication flows and language features to help learners make choices in their own usage helping them with further study, assessment, and employment.

The course is for teachers of English Functional Skills who want to expand their approaches to teaching speaking and listening skills.
Training aim
To consider the skills required for assessment as detailed in the Functional Skills English Subject Content To break these down into their component parts with some resources and activities to teach, practise and extend learners' skills, along with their awareness of different types of listening and speaking for communication.
Outcomes
On this course, you will:
- explore speaking and listening in the Functional Skills subject content
- discuss and share a range of activities and resources to develop learners' listening skills and extend their understanding of the power of their communicative choices.
By the end of this course, you will be more familiar with the skills and subskills required for teaching functional speaking and listening and be able to plan a range of activities to help learners to explore language forms for different audiences and purposes and produce appropriate transactional oral language for study, assessment, and work.
