Words are magnificent: increasing learners' word building and vocabulary skills (Code: C1489)

This interactive course is for you if your learners may have limited vocabulary and this impacts negatively on their performance. You will consider ways to assess your learners' vocabulary.

You will also be introduced to, and evaluate, some practical strategies to help your learners develop their vocabulary. In this course, participants will view and be encouraged to comment on a range of resources and best practice approaches.

Who is this for?

This course is for teachers and other practitioners delivering GCSE or Functional Skills English in the Further Education and Training sector. It is aimed at teachers of English GCSE and Functional Skills. It is suitable for new or experienced, qualified teachers and managers of English as well as Learning Support Assistants.

Training aim

To explore a range of practical teaching and learning activities that will both help assess and increase a learner's level of vocabulary.

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • examine the need to build learners' vocabulary for success in assessments
  • identify how to assess learners' levels of vocabulary
  • analyse how words are formed
  • appraise the value of a variety of word-building strategies
  • examine the benefits of teaching vocabulary in semantic fields
  • study a range of resources that can help to increase a learner's vocabulary for reading, writing and speaking & listening activities.

By the end of this course, you will be more aware of the meaning of 'word poverty' and be able to use a range of practical tools and strategies to assist learners with their word building and language development skills.

It is recommended that participants will be qualified to level 2 English and have a basic understanding of relevant terminology.
