Using formative assessment for planning English (Code: C1492)

This course offers an insight into the effectiveness of using formative assessment techniques when planning for both Functional Skills and GCSE English teaching. Methods for ensuring that impact is measured are covered plus the tracking of learners' incremental progress and encouraging them to take responsibility for their targets. It follows "Knowing your Learners' Starting Points" and complements some of the principles in "Marking and Assessing and feeding forward in English" around the setting of targets. It helps participants build their skills in this area.

Who is this for?

Teachers of Functional Skills and GCSE English in the post-16 sector and learning support assistants who support learners working towards these qualifications.

Training aim

The aims of this course are

  • to consider the benefits of using assessment practices formatively to inform teaching and learning,
  • to check the intended impact is being made,
  • to ensure that learners are progressing and to help learners take ownership of these targets.

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • develop a greater understanding of some of the effective uses of assessment, including monitoring learning, planning of activities and the benefits of using summative assessment formatively
  • discuss the various ways of tracking incremental progress
  • explore strategies for encouraging learners to take ownership of their targets and understand their own incremental progress
  • share and explore/evaluate practical strategies for planning effective assessments, tracking incremental progress and setting learners realistic targets which learners own

By the end of this course, you will have an improved awareness of educational theories and practical strategies to track learner progress.
