Giving your ESOL learners the best chance to pass Functional Skills English Part A (Code: C1500)
This two part course is for you if you support learners with ESOL needs who are learning Functional Skills English and you want to identify ways to maximise the learners' chances of passing their assessments.
You will be provided with the tools and strategies to effectively assess needs and support learners throughout their Functional Skills English programmes, focussing on speaking and listening skills in the first instance. A range of resources and best practice approaches will be trialled and evaluated.

Who is this for?
This course is aimed at teachers of Functional Skills English. It is suitable for new or experienced, qualified teachers and managers of English. It is also suitable for teachers or assessors on other programmes of study who need to support their learners with the Functional Skills English content.
Training aim
The course will provide Functional Skills English teachers with a good awareness of the needs and backgrounds of ESOL learners on Functional Skills programmes to help them plan for teaching and learning.
- Part A will focus on how to assess learners and on speaking, listening and communication.
- Part B will focus on gaining a good awareness of vocabulary and grammar needs and on reading and writing skills. It will also consider how to best prepare these learners for final assessment.
Outcomes
On this course you will:
- have an increased awareness of the language learning needs of ESOL speakers on Functional Skills English programmes
- explore the need for an accurate initial assessment that can be used to inform teaching and learning
- be able to adapt their teaching approaches and methods to suit the needs of learners with ESOL needs
- be more aware of the additional measures that may be needed to prepare ESOL learners for a final assessment.
By the end of this course, you will be more aware of the importance of making your Functional Skills English courses more accessible to your ESOL learners by using a range of strategies, resources and practical tools.

Entry Requirements
It is recommended that participants will be qualified to level 2 English and have a basic understanding of the subject content of Functional Skills English as well as a knowledge of terminology around language acquisition.
Though not necessary, you should attend both Parts of the course to get maximum benefit.
