Improving Reading in Functional Skills English (Code: C1503)

This course explores some of the key areas of reading that learners on Functional Skills courses find challenging. You will be guided to reflect on examples of common learner errors and consider strategies that could help them to improve. You will work with other practitioners to read a piece of text and design questions that could help Functional Skills learners to improve in one of the key areas they find challenging.

Who is this for?

Teachers of Functional Skills English or learning support assistants who support in these classes.

Training aim

To explore areas of Functional Skills reading which learners find difficult and consider possible teaching and learning approaches which could help them to improve.

Outcomes

On this course you will:

  • develop an improved awareness of some of the key challenges that learners face when approaching Functional Skills reading questions
  • explore and evaluate a range of teaching and learning approaches for improving reading
  • explore teaching and learning approaches to meet the reading needs of different learners

By the end of this course you will be able to identify key reading skills which learners need support with and plan strategies to help them overcome these challenges.
