Integrating English into vocational training (Code: C1504)

This interactive course aims to help teachers plan and deliver holistic learning activities that connect English to the learner's vocational area. All of the activities use the vocational area as the starting point.

The workshop focusses on two key areas: how to use the vocational area as the foundation for all English teaching and learning activities; and how to ensure that, as far as possible, activities are holistic and representative of what learners might find themselves undertaking in the workplace.

Who is this for?

This course is primarily for vocational tutors and assessors as well as those with an interest in learning more about how vocational trainers/assessors can approach the development of English skills to maximise learning opportunities on their programmes.

This could include apprenticeship managers, English and Maths managers, and employees involved in curriculum development and/or quality. tutors who teach GCSE or Functional Skills English or other tutors and support staff who need to support the development of learners' English skills.

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • explore and share strategies for engaging learners in the development of their English skills
  • identify naturally occurring English learning opportunities and explore how to maximise these
  • explore how to plan and develop holistic English learning activities in authentic workplace practice
  • develop practical strategies for building workplace vocabulary, reading and writing skills
  • identify and share strategies for motivating learners by using their vocational subject as a starting point for English activities.

By the end of this course, you will be able to devise and plan holistic activities which use the learner's vocational area as their starting point.
