The course lays the foundations to give you the knowledge, confidence and motivation to go on to attend other phonics courses. English teachers know that many learners re-sitting exams want to improve their reading and spelling, and it is not always the case that learners studying GCSE feel more confident in reading and spelling than those studying Functional Skills.

Outcomes
On this course, you will:
- learn about the following key terms and concepts: phoneme, grapheme, grapheme-phoneme correspondence, syllable, basic code, basic code plus and one-to-many
- explore some of the guiding principles of post-16 phonics.
By the end of this course, you will be able to break words down into their component phonemes, graphemes and syllables and have an improved awareness of how phonics can be used to support a wide range of learner needs (including adaptations for qualification differences and different approaches for supporting reading and spelling).
