Come and spend two hours in an interactive environment of problem solving and creativity. The World Economic Forum has predicted that by 2025, critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity will rank among the most important soft skills to have in the workplace. This course explores English learning activities and looks at how they can be maximised to develop learners' problem solving and creativity skills. These skills are being taught in English classrooms every day. This course will shine a spotlight on the skills and demonstrate how to make them explicit to learners.

Who is this for?

This course is for tutors who teach GCSE or Functional Skills English or other tutors and support staff who need to support the development of learners' English skills.

Training aim

You will be able to devise and plan learning activities which explicitly develop creativity and problem-solving skills in their learners.

Teachers of English will already be using a range of creative and problem-solving activities but may well not be identifying them as such. They may not be making the strategies or links with career development explicit.

Participants will be using strategies such as modelling, modifying texts, and collaborative learning which all sit under the umbrella of creativity and problem solving. This course is about making these activities and links explicit.

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • consider what creativity and problem solving are, the links between the two, and why they are relevant to learners' success in English
  • explore how to enhance inductive and explorative approaches with creativity and problem solving by using: greenhousing; creativity principles; and the four roles of creativity
  • apply creativity and problem-solving principles to the development of speaking/listening, reading and writing skills
  • evaluate how these strategies help to develop learner creativity and problem-solving skills

By the end of this course, you will be able to devise and plan learning activities which explicitly develop creativity and problem-solving skills in your learners.
