Algebra in Maths (Code: C1516)
Many learners struggle with the concepts of algebra within the workplace or in daily life. Chief Examiner reports identify simplifying an algebraic expression, writing an equation and using algebra for solving problems all presenting difficulties.
This interactive course will provide examples of activities that can be used with learners to develop their understanding of algebra, an area which is challenging to many. It will focus on algebraic expressions and linear equations and will look at how to encourage learners to rethink problems and secure their learning through tackling problems.
Upcoming
Who is this for?
This course is mainly for teachers and other practitioners delivering GCSE maths in the Further Education and Training sector.
Please note that this course was delivered as Maths topics learners find challenging: Algebra (C1186) in July and August 2021.
Training aim
To provide you with a range of strategies, approaches, and activities to support learners to develop their understanding and confidence in algebraic expressions and solving linear and simultaneous equations.
Outcomes
On this course, you will:
- investigate a range of activities that can support learners in creating and using algebraic expressions and linear equations relating to real-life problems
- explore ideas on using and developing contexts to help learners see the purpose of algebra
- consider rich, collaborative tasks, expose and discuss misconceptions and develop deeper thinking
- reflect on how you might use these activities and approaches in your own teaching.
Length
Two hours.
