BackThe application of ratio and proportion is foundational to learner understanding across multiple mathematics areas. In everyday life and the workplace, ratio and proportion are used extensively. Learners often find proportional reasoning problems difficult because they do not fully understand the concepts.
This interactive course will explore different ways ratio and proportion problems, relating to real-life and the workplace, can be solved as well as supporting problem solving development and reasoning skills for Functional Skills and GCSE.

This course is for teachers and other practitioners delivering GCSE maths and Functional Skills maths in the Further Education and Training sector. It may also be of interest to staff who are teaching T levels with a substantial mathematical component.
Training aim
To provide you with a range of strategies and activities to support learners to develop their understanding and confidence in solving ratio and proportion problems.
Outcomes
On this course you will:
- examine real-life and workplace contexts in which ratio and proportion are used
- consider a range of methodologies to support learners in their understanding and encourage deeper thinking
- investigate rich, collaborative tasks and expose and discuss misconceptions
- reflect on how you might use these activities and approaches in your teaching. .
