This course is a practical session to provide English teachers with strategies and ideas for using phonics in ways that are accessible, relevant and useful to learners. Tried and tested activities using phonics to improve reading and spelling in Functional Skills and GCSE English classes will be shared. You will work with other practitioners to evaluate their usefulness for your learners.

Who is this for?

Teachers of Functional Skills and GCSE English in the post-16 sector or learning support assistants who support learners working towards these qualifications.

This course is for teachers who already have a basic knowledge of the key terminology and concepts involved in phonics and the principles and practices underpinning the.

Training aim

To provide participants with an opportunity to share ideas for phonics activities that can be used to help learners to improve their reading or spelling and give teachers the tools to design useful phonics activities to support learners to achieve their goals in reading and spelling, as needed.

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • explore using a phonics approach to providing memory-friendly strategies for correcting errors
  • work collaboratively with peers to design or adapt phonics activities to support learners to develop their spelling skills
  • consider strategies for using phonics to develop learners' reading skills
  • evaluate phonics activities to assess their suitability for the needs of learners.

By the end of this course, you will be able to adapt, design and use phonics activities to help their learners to improve their reading or spelling, as needed.

Entry Requirements

This course will be particularly useful for teachers who already have some basic knowledge of the key terminology and concepts involved in phonics and the principles and practices underpinning post-16 phonics.

If you have never encountered phonics before, it is recommended that you attend the introductory course: "Phonics: An introduction to the key principles for use with post 16 learners". You might also like to consider attending 'Developing our learners' phonics skills'.
