Chairs Leadership Programme (Code: C1642)
A new programme for the 2024/25 year, the Chairs Leadership Programme by Kings College London brings together FE sector expertise and Kings College London's vast experience in leadership and governance to explore the role of the chair. It will utilise the insights and skills of participants and facilitators to identify concrete steps that allow participants to improve their impact on the board and the wider organisation.

A limited number of free places are offered on this course. Please see the 'Upcoming' section above for current availability. The free places are fully funded by the DfE and are offered to ensure greater diversity on high quality CPD, so to qualify you must either:
- Work in an organisation in one of the 24 priority areas (Blackpool, Bradford, Derby, Doncaster, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire, Halton, Hartlepool, Hastings, Ipswich, Knowsley, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Nottingham, Oldham, Portsmouth, Rochdale, Salford, Sandwell, Scarborough, Stoke-on-Trent, Tameside, Walsall, West Somerset).
- Work in an organisation with an annual turnover of less than £500,000.
- Consider yourself to have a disability.
- Come from black or minority ethnic community.
You must also agree to be contacted by our evaluation team.
To book a free place find a course that has free places remaining and book a single place. At the payments stage of the booking you will be asked to tell us which of the four criteria you meet. Once selected, click on the 'recalculate' button to reduce the cost of the booking to zero and complete the booking.
If, for whatever reason, you are unable to attend, please advise us at least two weeks before the course takes place. This will allow us to offer the free place to someone else who works in the FE sector, so they can take advantage of this offer.

Training aim
- 1 day residential in Birmingham with dinner and accomodation provided
- Series of 3 Unlearning /Relearning Masterclasses
- Mentoring programme – optional meetings to be decided with individual mentors
- Access to a series of Agile Learning Sets, in which a variety of FE governance and attendant subjects are raised, and facilitated peer to peer sharing of issues and solutions are discussed
Outcomes
Having completed this programme, the participant will be able to:
2. Report knowledge of additional strategies to strengthen the relationships between the Principal/CEO and governance professional to support effective governance
3. Report improved knowledge of how to plan for succession and other changes
4. Report increased awareness of boardroom dynamics, and improved ability to resolve tension and conflict
5. Report improved awareness of strategies for stakeholder engagement and building partnerships
Length
- Session 1: 11/11/2024: 1 day residential in Birmingham with overnight accommodation provided on evening of 11/11/24. Lunch upon arrival followed by introduction to programme, interactive sessions delivered by leading academics from King’s Business School. Opening day will be followed by dinner, which includes a guest speaker from HE.

- Session 2: 19/12/2024: Hosted at Kings College London followed by a curated tour of the Courtauld Gallery, linking themes of leadership and risk - masterclass 1
- Session 3: 30/01/2025: Sixways Stadium Worcester (Home of Worcester Rugby); featuring a session delivered by Nick Baxter, the leading try scorer in national league rugby, a former member of Barbarians rugby team - masterclass 2
- Session 4: 05/03/2025: The Crick Institute, London, a biomedical research centre in N London, one of Europes biggest labs and home to over 1500 scientists - masterclass 3
