This course is for post-16 maths teachers and subject specialists teaching ESOL learners in Functional Skills or GCSE maths programmes, who want to reduce language-related barriers and develop inclusive classroom practices that improve access, participation, and attainment for all learners.
Training aim
-
The aim of this course is to support maths teachers to embed inclusive, language-aware pedagogy into everyday maths teaching. Participants will develop strategies to:
-
reduce language-related barriers for ESOL learners
-
support mathematical reasoning and discussion
-
design tasks that maintain high expectations while improving access for all learners
The course focuses on whole-class approaches that improve outcomes for ESOL learners while strengthening teaching and learning for the wider group.
-
Note: These courses are designed to be interactive and model best practice using resources and activities tailored for both a digital and physical learning environment. Therefore, we do not offer recordings of sessions, however, we do share all materials following the course's completion.
Outcomes
- Consider the diverse profiles of ESOL learners in post-16 maths classrooms
- Recognise and analyse the language demands of maths
- Apply a range of instructional strategies to support ESOL learners in developing mathematical language
- Explore the CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) model as a tool to support ESOL learners in developing secure mathematical understanding with reduced language load.
- Explore strategies for building learner confidence with “wordy” problem-solving questions.
- Consider the design of inclusive activities that support access without lowering challenge.
- Consider effective assessment for learning strategies to assess ESOL maths learners accurately and distinguish between language and mathematical barriers.
