Mentoring Skills Application

Mentoring programme offers two blended learning programmes to develop the use of high-quality mentoring in the FE & Training Sector.

  1. The Mentoring Skills for New Mentors programme is designed to support FE practitioners who are new or relatively new to mentoring or coaching teacher or trainer colleagues in the FE sector.

It will give you the opportunity to engage with new subject knowledge and develop new mentoring skills working within a training cluster and with a trainer experienced in mentoring. You will undertake mentoring practice alongside engaging in both reflective practice and Action Learning Sets to build peer support.

The programme will help you to develop your skills to enable you to mentor colleagues in your organisation.

  2. The Advanced Mentoring Skills for Experienced Mentors programme is designed to support experienced mentors who are more senior practitioners or managers within the FE sector (although not necessarily teaching professionals).

It will give you the opportunity to deepen your mentoring knowledge and develop and enhance your practical mentoring skills. You will engage in supervision activities and set up or improve a mentoring programme within your organisation. Working with peers, you will engage in Action Learning Set as a professional development tool and will build a community of practice.

The programme will help you to develop skills to enable you to set up or improve a mentoring programme for your

If your application is successful your provider will receive a grant to contribute towards the cost of reducing your teaching timetable so you can undertake the programme and are able to conduct a minimum of 40 hours of mentoring support (NB this is a core component of the professional development programme). If reducing your teaching timetable is not feasible, then the grant may contribute to the cost of paying you to undertake the additional mentoring responsibilities.

In addition, the grant may contribute to the cost of reducing mentees' teaching timetables so they are able to meet with you on a regular basis, administrative costs of a mentoring coordinator who will match mentors and mentees, monitor the number of meetings taking place, and complete a monthly performance report for ETF, and travel costs for you to attend the in-person mentoring professional development programme.

There is an FAQ document here including the full eligibility criteria, you may wish to read this before completing your application.

Completing the application form

Please complete all elements of the application form, providing as much detail as possible.

As part of the application process, you will be prompted to provide details of the grant lead who will be asked to provide you with support, approve your application and provide a budget on how the grant will be utilised. It can be beneficial to have discussed your application, aims and objectives and their role before completing your application. Without their approval and budget, you will not be accepted to the programme.

The grant contact should be a manager or leader in the organisation who will ensure that you are able to mentor colleagues for 40-50 hours and attend the professional development programme. This person will manage how the grant is spent and will be required to attend short progress calls with the ETF for the duration of the professional development programme.
