This interactive course will help you to explore the importance of teaching learners more about the differences between speech and writing so that they can use language purposefully and make informed communicative choices.

With a focus on practical activities, and using real samples, you will explore how speaking and listening skills can be used to inform ad improve writing. You will have the opportunity to discuss themes and experiences and to share ideas with each other.

Who is this for?

This course is for teachers of English who want to expand their approaches to teaching speaking and listening skills and gain deeper understanding of why spoken language development is important.

Training aim

To:

  • help participants develop a deeper understanding of the features of and attitudes to spoken language
  • explore the difference between spoken and written language
  • demonstrate how to use activities to underpin other skills
  • equip teachers with the tools and confidence to discuss speaking and listening with their students
  • provide some resources and activities to practise and extend learners' skills.

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • explore the difference between spoken and written language
  • consider the effects of attitudes to varieties of spoken language in terms of accent/dialect and regional variation
  • consider the importance of register and appropriateness for context/purpose including formality and informality and how these help develop learners' understanding of their communicative choices
  • consider how to use talk in the classroom to support learning and study
  • discuss and share a range of activities and resources to develop learners' listening and speaking skills.

By the end of this course, you will be able to plan activities to develop your learners' speaking and listening skills which engage them and develop their confidence when using these skills for assessment, study, progression and work.
