This course explores ways of using phonics to identify and plan for the needs of learners. You will reflect on common errors learners on FS and GCSE English courses make and be guided to explore phonics strategies for improvement.

It will be beneficial for teachers who have a basic knowledge of the key terminology and concepts involved in phonics and the principles and practices underpinning them.

Who is this for?

This course is for teachers of Functional Skills and GCSE English in the post-16 sector or learning support assistants who support learners working towards these qualifications.

Training aim

To explore how we can look at learners' work through a phonics lens and use a phonics approach diagnostically in order to best meet the needs of learners.

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • analyse learners' work using a phonics lens to diagnose learner needs
  • explore a phonics approach to using memory-friendly strategies for correcting errors
  • share strategies for supporting learners to hear the sounds and syllables that make up a word
  • explore strategies for supporting learners to make phonics a regular part of their personal toolkit

By the end of this course, you will be able to use the errors in learners' work to identify, adapt and design suitable phonics activities to help them to improve their spelling and/or reading.

Entry Requirements

This course will be particularly useful for teachers who already have some basic knowledge of the key terminology and concepts involved in phonics and the principles and practices underpinning post-16 phonics.

If teachers have never encountered phonics before, it is recommended that they attend the "Phonics: an introduction to the key principles" course first.
