BackPost 16 learners often have low self-esteem and resilience when it comes to their reading skills. Many feel that this is an area in which they have already 'failed'. Teachers also frequently experience a gap between learners' decoding and comprehension skills.
This course is the second of two to focus on reading skills for post-16 learners. It will help teachers to explore, try out and evaluate some reading approaches which encourage problem-solving and resilient reading behaviours.

This course is for tutors who teach GCSE or Functional Skills English or other tutors and support staff who need to support the development of learners' English skills.
Training aim
To help teachers work with learners to improve their reading abilities. It will review approaches trialled by post-16 teachers that help develop learners' investigative and problem-solving skills, thereby improving their reading resilience.
Outcomes
On this course, you will:
- consider what problem-solving and resilient reading behaviours are and might look like in our learners
- explore strategies for reading which encourage problem-solving, collaboration and investigation by learners
- evaluate how these strategies help to develop learner resilience to reading and metacognitive skills.
By the end of this course, you will be able to devise and plan reading activities which encourage problem-solving and resilient behaviours and develop their learners' metacognitive skills.
