Modelling and abstraction (Code: C1513)
Modelling mathematics aids understanding and helps scaffold learners into better reasoning and problem solving skills. This course explores Concrete, Abstract and Pictorial (CAP) representations that support deep learning and a better understanding of algebraic skills, geometric connections and number work, including conversions. It is helpful for maths study and for everyday life and work.

Who is this for?
This course is for teachers and other practitioners delivering GCSE maths in the Further Education and Training sector. Those delivering Functional Skills maths, vocational or technical courses would also find much of this course useful.
Training aim
To enable you to better support your learners in their learning of abstract concepts, within algebra, number and geometry, and identify the connections between them. You will be able to apply the research behind Concrete, Abstract and Pictorial representations to develop your learners' deep learning of these skills.
Outcomes
On this course, you will:
- investigate modelling techniques, including bar models, arrow diagrams and algebra tiles
- identify the value of the techniques in relation to deep learning of abstract algebra, number work including fractions and links to geometry
- consider the research behind concrete, pictorial and abstract representation of mathematical models
- reflect upon how you might use these activities and approaches in your own teaching.
Length
Two hours.
