Number at the core of maths (Code: C1515)

There is evidence from Chief Examiner reports which identifies the key topic areas of number work with place value, BIDMAS and estimation as ones likely to present some difficulty for maths learners. They form the foundations of good maths learning.

This course explores a range of methods and approaches that support number skills development and deep learning including place value, BIDMAS and estimation approaches suitable for both GCSE and Functional Skills maths.

Who is this for?

This course is for practitioners delivering GCSE and Functional Skills maths as we consider the role of number within each curriculum and identify it as the bedrock of learning maths at work and in everyday life. It will be useful for anyone teaching courses where number is a crucial component.

To provide you with a range of strategies and activities that engage maths learners in the use of number, its properties and order of operations

Outcomes

On this course, you will:

  • consider the importance of BIDMAS, place value and estimation within number work
  • explore the value of fluent number work and estimation
  • investigate number methods including rounding and chunking
  • reflect upon how you might use these activities and approaches in your own teaching.
