Chairs of the Future (Code: C1643)
The Chairs of the Future programme is a leadership development course delivered by the Institute of Directors (IoD) and the Education and Training Foundation (ETF). This programme is aimed at supporting established governors with the objective of becoming a chair in the FE sector to identify the skills and competencies they have and the ones they need to develop to lead a board.

Free Places
A limited number of free places are offered on this course. Please see the 'Upcoming' section above for current availability. The free places are fully funded by the DfE and are offered to ensure greater diversity on high quality CPD, so to qualify you must either:
- Work in an organisation in one of the 24 priority areas (Blackpool, Bradford, Derby, Doncaster, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire, Halton, Hartlepool, Hastings, Ipswich, Knowsley, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Nottingham, Oldham, Portsmouth, Rochdale, Salford, Sandwell, Scarborough, Stoke-on-Trent, Tameside, Walsall, West Somerset).
- Work in an organisation with an annual turnover of less than £500,000.
- Consider yourself to have a disability.
- Come from black or minority ethnic community.
You must also agree to be contacted by our evaluation team.
To book a free place find a course that has free places remaining and book a single place. At the payments stage of the booking you will be asked to tell us which of the four criteria you meet. Once selected, click on the 'recalculate' button to reduce the cost of the booking to zero and complete the booking.
If, for whatever reason, you are unable to attend, please advise us at least two weeks before the course takes place. This will allow us to offer the free place to someone else who works in the FE sector, so they can take advantage of this offer.
Who is this for?
The Chairs of the Future is aimed at those aspiring to become Chairs within the next 1-3 years, this could include vice-chairs, committee chairs, and senior governors.
Training aim
The programme brings together the IoD's experience and insight into chairing senior leadership groups with issues that organisational chairs in all sectors (including FE) are facing now, for example, Covid-19 recovery, Brexit implications, and the ESG/sustainability agenda. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their roles as governance leaders throughout the programme and following its completion, by participating in all learning components.

- Attendance on 2 day residential course
- 5 virtual action-learning set group sessions
- Coaching and mentoring opportunities
- Case study development
- Invitation to Alumni Conference in 2024.
Outcomes
Having completed this programme, participants will have a greater understanding of:
- Ability to manage/build an inclusive team
- Relationship building with Principal/CEO and GP
- Championing a culture of continuous improvement.
- Strategies for external stakeholder engagement
- Resilience planning and risk management
Length
The programme will include a 2 day residential with a range of high-profile keynote speakers, with participants receiving follow-up coaching and taking part in five action learning sets over the following 3 months.

- Coaching and mentoring opportunities
- Case study development
- Invitation to Alumni Conference in 2024.
Participants are expected to undertake all learning elements within the programme.
Entry Requirements
This programme is open to vice-chairs, committee chairs, and senior governors aspiring to become a chair within a FE college.
