This interactive course explores strategies to enhance learners’ conceptual understanding, fluency, and problem-solving skills, ensuring they gain a strong maths foundation.

Participants will examine the Teaching for Mastery Key Principles for FE and their application, learn how to develop mathematical reasoning and deepen learners’ understanding, explore techniques to address common misconceptions, and discover practical ways to foster engagement, resilience, and confidence in maths learning.

Who is this for?

This course is designed for Further Education (FE) maths educators who want to develop a deeper understanding of mastery-based teaching approaches.

This course is aimed at experienced teachers of GCSE maths and those who already hold a maths subject specialism and/or a teaching qualification. It is designed to meet the needs of all parts of the FE and Skills sector, but is particularly suitable for those teaching in the GCSE re-sit classroom.

 

Training aim

This course aims to develop practitioners' understanding of:

  • The Teaching for Mastery Key Principles for FE
  • How examplar resources and lessons have been designed and how they should be used
  • How teachers might adapt their own teaching so that it becomes more aligned with Teaching for Mastery approaches.

Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge and confidence to:

  • Use Teaching for Mastery approaches in your own classrooms
  • Develop a toolkit of strategies to overcome learners' negative attitudes so that they become more resilient maths learners
  • Embrace new ways of working which respond to gaps in learners' skills and understanding
  • Adopt Mastery teaching approaches which deepen learners' understanding of key concepts and improve learners' mathematical reasoning and problem solving.

 

Length

10 online sessions, two hours each, once a week for 10 weeks.

You will also be expected to engage in independent reflection between facilitated sessions.

Entry Requirements

  • Employment in a teaching/training role in the post-16 education and training sector
  • Currently delivering GCSE maths or expecting to soon
  • A maths subject specialism and/or a teaching qualification
