This two-part course is designed for English teachers working with Functional Skills and GCSE learners. It offers practical guidance on supporting students through the entire non-fiction writing process—from planning and structuring writing for specific audiences and purposes , to using teacher modelling and collaborative techniques to build writing confidence.

Part 1 focuses on planning and structuring non-fiction texts for exam success, while Part 2 explores how teacher modelling and collaborative writing strategies can boost learners' writing skills in engaging and interactive ways.

Training aim

To develop practitioners’ knowledge and confidence in supporting learners through the full non-fiction writing process for GCSE and Functional Skills English—starting with planning and structuring writing, and progressing to using modelling and collaboration techniques to improve writing outcomes.  

Outcomes

On this course you will:  

  • Identify key challenges learners face with non-fiction writing and apply practical strategies to develop planning, structure, and coherence in their written work. 
  • Design and deliver purposeful activities that develop learners’ ability to plan, organise , and write clearly for a range of non-fiction purposes and audiences.
  • Apply teacher modelling techniques to demonstrate writing processes clearly and support learners’ writing development.
  • Explore collaborative writing strategies and interactive tools to increase learner engagement and improve writing outcomes in Functional Skills and GCSE English.

This 2-part course is 4 hours total. 

  • Open format: 2 x 2 hour sessions
